Once a symbol of 90s counterculture and teenage rebellion, the skateboard embodied a defiant "fuck you" to authority. But as that generation grew up, the raw energy of rebellion shifted into adult life, obeying the rules of capitalism. Now co-opted by the mainstream, skateboarding is an Olympic sport, neatly packaged with rules, regulations, and corporate sponsorship — As Grayson Perry quipped: "Nice rebellion, welcome in." These boards cracked during firing and have been repaired by the process of Kintsugi. This unintentional imperfection also highlighted that the material doesn’t always follow the rules of the maker.
